Open an eBay Store
When I conduct web site seminars for retailers, one of the most common questions is, "What about a store on eBay?"
I'm not sure who or what encouraged
retailers to choose eBay over making a site on their own, but whomever it was
made a huge impression.
I've attended eBay seminars in the past, most notably events that were held in
conjunction with The New York International Gift Fair.
eBay management served
attendees free lunch, and for about 90 minutes, walked us through categories,
keywords, promotion and other attributes to their auction and site systems.
This seminar was held before they began auctioning big ticket merchandise such
as airplanes and vintage automobiles, so that makes any information contained in
the handbook each of us received a bit dated and unworthy of sharing here.
Here what to consider before creating an online store through eBay.
1. Anything that streamlines the process of opening an online store is a positive, especially if it's accompanied by marketing tools.
2. Creating a site on your own, or even with expert support, will take time, but so will setting up on eBay.
But eBay might make the online selling process easier. Notice that I used the word "might."
The best way to find out which method is better is by asking people who've experienced both sides. Don't go by hearsay. Talk to people who've been "through the trenches."
3. Review eBay's tutorials, frequently-asked questions, and design center to acclimate yourself with their templates. As for the online success stories, read them to uncover similarities while remembering that the stories are part of eBay's marketing machine.
Here's the main eBay store page to learn how to proceed and find links to the areas outlined above.
The expected benefit with creating a store on eBay is that their popular name will help you with marketing and sales. Don't leave it all in their hands; long-lasting results benefits come through your own promotions. I share some ideas on marketing your store in 10 Ways to Promote Your Store.
